Practice Information

Practice Philosophy:

“What do I do?” Counseling and Psychotherapy.

Emotional and behavioral problems seem to fall into four types:

1) Problems producing excess anxiety or depression.
2) Problems dealing with other people (romantic partners, parents, work relationships).
3) Problems with parenting children.
4) Problems of unwanted habits, usually unintentionally acquired.

The solution for these problems can be described as a sequence of…
1. Self-calming
2. Feeling safe
3. Learning something new
4. Using that new learning.

While this might sound simplistic, in practice it’s more like navigating a two-lane highway in hilly terrain, rather than putting a car on cruise control and boring along the interstate.

Problems of anxiety and depression are resolved most easily with cognitive behavior therapies. This same model works well with stopping unwanted habits.

Problems dealing with other people are resolved by using a combination of assertiveness training and Gottman’s couple counseling, both of which are easy to understand and use.

Parenting problems depend on the age of the child(ren).

- Children under 12 or so, respond best when parents use their attention to increase desired behaviors and their inattention to decrease undesired behaviors.
- Children in their teens are best managed by the addition of accurate listening and summarizing.
- Not many people like to be criticized, blamed, or “told what to do”, so relying on those tactics rarely produce the kind of behavior that is desired. Punishment may seem to produce results, but revenge and subterfuge are the more likely results.
- Regardless of the children’s ages, parents are encouraged to learn and conduct weekly “family council meetings” to assure continued compliance. Parents whose emotional or behavioral issues interfere with parenting are encouraged to correct those issues.
